CHRISTMAS EFFORTS AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES 2009

THANK YOUThe response to our request for volunteers has been wonderful.  We still need volunteer bell ringers (call John at 302-472-0728) and some volunteers for the Angel Tree (call Tonya at 824-1184).

With your help we took applications from hundreds of families for Christmas assistance which include nearly 3,000 children.  With so many people out of work and struggling to survive it is difficult to keep up with life's necessities.  Parents struggling to even feed their family have come to The Salvation Army hoping that we can provide a new toy for their child for Christmas morning.

The need is overwhelming this year, and so we are reaching out to the community for help.  Donations of new unwrapped toys, coats sizes 12 months through adult extra large (for "bigger kids"), and gifts for children through age 12 are desperately needed.  Donations can be brought to our main facility in Wilmington at the 104 W. 5th Street Entrance which is open 24 hours.

***Please read below about our special Coats And Toys  drop off day to be held at Frawley Stadium on December 11th.

Thank you for sharing with others this Christmas Season.

DOING THE MOST GOOD. . .

DURING THE HARSH WINTER MONTHS

Code Purple is a program open during the winter months to provide emergency shelter for homeless men and women when the temperature reaches 10 degrees or heavy snow is predicted. There, they are given a warm place to sleep, food, an opportunity to shower, warm clothing and information relative to assistance we offer through our other programs. Women and children who need this additional service are placed in our Emergency Housing Residence. One of our staff said, "All the guys are so appreciative. They know we care about them, treat them with respect, share conversation and just make sure they know how important they are." Between the months of December 2008 and March 2009 we opened our doors to 409 men and women offering a safe haven from the freezing winter weather.

Can you help? Our Food Pantry needs to be replenished. As many Delawareans face financial hardships we are seeing more families coming to us for help with food. It's hard to have to choose between paying for needed medicine, electricity or food to feed your family. Especially hard hit are our Seniors who are barely surviving on fixed incomes. We need canned goods such as: Soups, tuna, canned meat, ravioli, spaghetti, fruits and more. Dry Goods like cereal, macaroni & cheese, rice. . .items that can easily be prepared.

Throughout the year we have an ongoing need to replenish supplies for our Emergency Housing Residence for single women and women with children.
